The Lacawac Sanctuary is a nature preserve and historic site located in the Pocono Mountains in northeastern Pennsylvania. Its main function is the protection of its natural areas and historic buildings, including Lake Lacawac, a pristine glacial lake, and stands of virgin forest.
Lacawac also provides a living laboratory for scientists who are interested in the way that natural systems work. Research has been ongoing at the lake and its surroundings for half a century and it is one of the main missions of the sanctuary.
Education forms the second main focus at Lacawac, allowing students and the general public to become more aware of and informed about the environment. Refer to our calendar for information on upcoming events.
Part of the local history and conserving an Adirondack style summer estate built in 1903, Lacawac is also an important cultural center for the people of the Poconos and beyond.
Over three miles of hiking trails are open during daylight hours. Starting at the parking area near the Coulter Visitor Center, three loop trails are each moderate hikes that can be accomplished at a leisurely pace in less than one hour. Highlights include the Ledges and deer exclosures on the Maurice Brown Trail and an over look of Lake Lacawac on the Lake Lacawac Trail.
Also visit our Native Plant Garden located near the Coulter Visitor Center. Peak bloom time is July and August.
Visitors are asked to please sign the guest register and obtain information at the kiosk and Visitor Center.
Please be aware, the Sanctuary's roads receive minimal winter road maintenance.
Since 1966, Lacawac has been in the stewardship of a non-profit organization that functions on a limited staff, the hard work of volunteers, members, a board of directors, and many users and visitors. Please become a member today!
